1. There is y there are

There is y there are son dos estructuras equivalentes a la forma impersonal del verbo haber en tiempo presente: hay. Como veremos en este tema, esta estructura se puede utilizar también en otros tiempos verbales (presente, pasado,  presente perfecto, etc.).

THERE IS

There is a lot of rice on this plate.

Hay mucho arroz en este plato.

 

 

 

THERE ARE

There are three peppers in my fridge.

Hay tres pimientos en mi nevera.

 

 

2. La estructura de there is y there are 

There is se utiliza con nombres contables en singular introducidos por los artículos indeterminados a/an o el número one y con nombre incontable, es decir objeto o sujeto en singular.

 There are se utiliza con nombres contables en plural. Como veremos a continuación, esta regla se aplica también para el past simple y el present perfect. Sin embargo, no se aplica en el future simple.

¿Cuándo se usan “there is” y “there are”?

Utilizamos “there is” y “there are” para expresar la existencia de algo, tal y como se hace en español con el verbo “haber” en situaciones como esta:

There’s somebody at the door. (Hay alguien a la puerta).

También se emplean para preguntar acerca de la existencia de algo, como en:

Are there any questions? (¿[Hay] alguna pregunta?).

INTERROGATIVE	Singular	Is there...?	Is there a place where I can leave my luggage? Yes, there is.¿Hay algún lugar dónde pueda dejar mi maleta? Sí.
	Plural	Are there...?	Are there any shops open today? No, there aren't.¿Hay tiendas abiertas hoy? No.

Reglas

Fíjate en cómo se forman las oraciones afirmativas, negativas e interrogativas en singular y en plural:

Singular	Plural
AFFIRMATIVE There’s a spider in my room. Hay una araña en mi cuarto.	AFFIRMATIVE There are three people waiting. Hay tres personas esperando.
NEGATIVE There isn’t a thing I can do about it. No hay nada que yo pueda hacer / Yo no puedo hacer nada [al respecto].	NEGATIVE There aren’t any chocolates left. No quedan bombones.
INTERROGATIVE Is there a reason why you’re late? ¿Hay alguna razón por la que llegas tarde?	INTERROGATIVE Are there any more sandwiches? ¿Hay más / Quedan sándwiches?

 

El uso de “is” o “are” depende de si el objeto (que aparece detrás del verbo “to be”) está en singular o en plural. Observa:

There’s an error in your homework (Tienes un error en los ejercicios).

There are two errors in your homework (Tienes dos errores en los ejercicios).
