Cardinal Numbers

Cardinal numbers are ordinary numbers like 1, 2, 3. In the chart below, you can see how we make numbers from 0 to 100 - 1,000 – 10,000 -  100,000 etc, and then some units above that.

The numbers from 13 (thirteen) to 19 (nineteen) all end in -teen and are called the teens. This is why people from thirteen to nineteen years of age are called teenagers.

Examples:

·        There are five books on the desk.

·        Ray is ten years old.

 Numbers bigger than 20

99	ninety-nine

Numbers bigger than 100

Use a hyphen (guión) between compound numbers and the word and.

Use either the definite article a or one for 100.  Puedes usar a  o  one

356	three hundred and fifty-six
999	nine hundred and ninety-nine

Numbers bigger than 1,000

Use a hyphen between compound numbers and the word and.

Use either the definite article a or one for 1,000.

Separate three digits with a comma (,) → 50,000.  Usamos la coma ,  para separar los últimos tres dígitos.

 DIFERENTES NOMBRES DEL NÚMERO CERO EN INGLÉS (pronunciación y uso)

1. ZERO ("sírou")

- Para referirnos al número cero como tal (number zero).

- Operaciones matemáticas (0 + 1 = 1; zero plus one equals one).

- Temperatura (-5º C = five degrees below zero).

2. O ("óu")

- Números de teléfono (604... = six, o, for...).

- Números de habitaciones (701 = seven o one).

- Hora militar (5:07 = five o seven).

- Fechas (1909 = nineteen o nine).
